The baggage allowance for Economy and Business Class works according to weight per piece of luggage and varies according to where in the world you’re flying. 
• Economy Class – varies from one to two pieces not exceeding 23 kg (50 lb) with a height not exceeding 158 cm (62 inches) each.
• Business Class – varies from one to two pieces not exceeding 32 kg (70 lb) with a height not exceeding 158 cm (62 inches) each.
• Flights between SA and Lagos are the exception with three pieces of luggage accepted for Economy and Business Class (at the weights and dimensions just provided). 
Please note
• Any piece of luggage that is heavier than 32 kg will be shipped as cargo and will incur additional costs.
• There may be different baggage allowances on either side of a stopover flight. However, same day connections are not considered stopovers and have a uniform baggage allowance across all flights. 
Free baggage allowance
• Children and infants paying a minimum of 50% of the adult fare are entitled to the same baggage allowance as adults. 
• Infants not utilising a seat are only permitted to one piece of luggage not exceeding 10 kg and a collapsible buggy or car seat.
Dangerous goods
There are a number of restricted items and goods considered too dangerous to travel with. These range from lithium batteries and flammable solids to oxidising materials and corrosives. Please visit the SAA website for more details.
Transporting liquids
International security regulations have placed restrictions on the quantity of liquid, aerosols and gels (LAGs) that passengers are allowed in their hand luggage when travelling overseas. The packaging and transportation requirements are as follows:
• LAGs must be stored in 100 ml containers and then packed in a 20 cm x 20 cm transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.
• One bag is allowed per passenger and must be shown at airport security.
• Medication, baby products and special dietary products are exempt, as are duty free purchases such as cigarettes, alcohol and perfume.
Hand luggage
• Economy Class – one piece not exceeding 8 kg (18 lb) and 56 cm x 23 cm
• Business Class – two pieces not exceeding 8 kg (18 lb) and 56 cm x 23 cm
Special baggage
• Some sports equipment, not exceeding 23 kg, is allowed free of charge per passenger aboard SAA flights. For a detailed list, visit the SAA website. Items that are not included on this list must be checked in and paid for as cargo. 
• While SAA accepts musical instruments for carriage, an additional fee is levied.
Domestic check-in
Flights between Cape Town and Durban are operated by SAA’s partner Mango. The recommended check-in time is between 1.5 and 2 hours prior to departure. For flights between Cape Town the rest of South Africa a check in time of at least 1.5 hours is recommended. Check in and acceptance of baggage ends 40 minutes prior to departure.
International check in        
Flights between South Africa and the US require passengers to check in at least 3 hours before departure. Flights between South Africa and the rest of the world require check in at least 2.5 hours before departure. During check in and boarding, the airline may request passenger’s immigration information so as to avoid penalties. 
Online check in
Save time during your trip by checking in ahead of time. SAA offers four convenient options, as follows:
• Online – print your boarding pass up to 24 hours before departure and select your seat. This option remains open for 1.5 hours before domestic departures and 2 hours before international flights.
• Mobile – to check in using your smartphone, visit Enter your booking reference at the check in screen and download your boarding pass for airport security to scan. 
• Self check-in kiosks – these touchscreen devices allow you to download your confirmed boarding pass up to 1.5 hours before departure.
• Bag drop counter – so you’ve checked yourself in beforehand? Head to a bag drop counter where your luggage will be tagged and checked in.
